Box Turtle Three Toe behavior

The Three Toed Box Turtle is aptly named for the three toes found on its hind feet; however, this is not necessarily an identifying feature. Some Three Toed Box Turtles have four toes, and other individuals belonging to different box turtle subspecies sometimes have only three toes. Once very common in the wild, the Three Toed Box Turtle's numbers have decreased for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, many get run over by cars and many are taken from the wild for the pet trade, and as land is being taken over, they lose much ground to developers. They can live 30 to 40 years or possibly much longer according to some sources. Three Toed Box Turtles tend to be shy but some individuals are quite outgoing once they are comfortable in their surroundings.
